Politicians, some born here, some representing the area, have risen to some of the highest offices in government and earned their place in Britain's history.
Sir
Henry Campbell-Bannerman (1836-1908)
Sir
Henry Campbell-Bannerman became the Liberal Member of Parliament
for Stirling in 1868. He was notable
in opposing the Boer War and as an advocate of comprehensive
social reforms, including the introduction of pensions for
the elderly and also school meals. He was seen as one of the
most progressive figures within his part, which he led from
1899. Following the resignation of the Conservative Government
from office in 1905, Campbell Bannerman led his party to a
landslide victory in the 1906 General Election.
John
Smith (1938-1994)
John
Smith was leader of the Labour Party from 1992 until his sudden
death two years later. He was born in Dalmally
in Argyll and went to school in Dunoon,
becoming a barrister, prior to becoming an MP in 1970. His
career earned him high respected among politicians of all
persuasions, and his death was widely felt in Scottish and
in UK politics. He is buried on Iona.
George
Robertson

island of Islay, George Robertson was educated at Dunoon Grammar
School, became a Labour MP in 1978 and ultimately served as
Defence Secretary (1997-9) in the Labour Government. He was
