Start at Balloch, where the National Park Gateway Centre makes the perfect launching-point for your tour. From Balloch you can also relax aboard a loch cruise.
Follow the A82 North to the pretty village of Luss and enjoy a stroll by the bonnie banks of Loch Lomond.
Continue northwards via Tarbet (more loch cruises). Here you can detour westwards to the woodland walks and gardens of the Argyll Forest zone of the National Park (see also Tour 3).
For Breadalbane continue North via Glen Falloch, passing remnants of ancient Caledonian Pine Forest. At Crianlarich turn East on the A85, then A827, to the Alpine-like village of Killin, cradled among towering mountain scenery by the spectacular Falls of Dochart.
Return to the A85, climbing over Glen Ogle – dubbed by Queen Victoria ‘the Khyber Pass of Scotland’ – to Lochearnhead.
Now join the A84 through Strathyre and along Loch Lubnaig to Kilmahog, where you turn West, following The Trossachs Trail (A821).
From Trossachs Pier the vintage steamship Sir Walter Scott provides matchless cruises amidst the serene beauty of Loch Katrine, deep in Rob Roy Country.
Rejoin the A821 to cross the spectacular Duke’s Pass, stopping at David Marshall Lodge for a picnic or forest walk, before exploring the gateway village of Aberfoyle.
Heading South on the A81 look out for a cross roads with the A811 and turn West for the quaint village of Drymen. Here the B837 leads back to Loch Lomond, this time at Balmaha on the quieter Eastern shore (boat trips and boat hire available).
Retrace your steps to Drymen and take the A811 South to return to Balloch. En route a short walk up Duncryne Hill, by the village of Gartocharn, is rewarded with a classic view across Loch Lomond and its myriad of gentle islands.
